Основные цели работы – определить наличие и оценить характер связей асимметрии строения корневой системы с закручиванием ствола дерева; изучить характер взаимосвязей между морфологическими характеристиками латеральных корней первого порядка, ствола и косослоя заболони на примере деревьев сосны обыкновенной, произрастающих в естественном насаждении в экстремальных для данного вида гидротермических условиях верхового болота (Средний Урал, Россия). У двух групп деревьев VI класса возраста, не имеющих и имеющих внешние признаки косослоя (32 и 38 деревьев группах соответственно), измеряли: диаметры ствола без коры у шейки корня и на расстоянии 1.3 м от нее; высоты; углы наклона древесных волокон и длины косослойной части ствола, а также высоты, на которой она начинается; количество латеральных корней первого порядка, их периметры и углы между ними. Для анализа строения корневой системы использовали показатели ее асимметрии по расположению в пространстве, а также по характеристикам радиального роста. Величины показателей рассчитывали, как средние для данного дерева пропорции отличия либо углов межу отдельными корнями, либо периметров корней от среднего значения соответственно. Установлено, что вариабельность морфологических характеристик корней и характер их взаимосвязей отличаются у закрученных и незакрученных деревьев. Оценка взаимосвязей отдельных характеристик позволила выявить 5 отличий между двумя изучаемыми группами по наличию статистически значимых корреляций (R = 0.34–0.52). Косослой ствола возникает в процессе роста дерева и его образование не зависит непосредственно от строения системы корней первого порядка. Появлению косослоя способствуют относительно малое количество латеральных корней и низкая пространственная асимметрия корневой системы. Существуют положительные корреляции между длиной косослоя ствола и характеристиками роста корней, включая максимальную толщину корня и асимметрию периметров корней.
